What Is a 10-Wheeler Dump Truck?

The term 10-wheeler describes the total wheel count on the truck: 2 front steer wheels + 4 wheels on the first rear axle (dual tyres, left and right) + 4 wheels on the second rear axle (dual tyres, left and right) = 10 wheels total. In axle notation this is 6x4 — three axles, of which the two rear axles are driven. This is different from a 12-wheeler (8x4), which adds a fourth axle and carries more payload, and from a 6-wheeler (4x2), which has only one rear drive axle and lower payload.

On a 10-wheeler tipper, the two rear drive axles share the load, giving the truck the structural strength to carry 18–25 metric tonnes of aggregate, sand, soil, or quarry rock. The steel dump body is typically 18–20 m³ volume. A rear hydraulic hoist lifts the body for discharge; some units have a three-way side-and-rear tip option.
